How I Sleep at Night

On November 19, 2012 · Leave a Comment · In Health and wellness

Last week, I asked, How DO I sleep at night???? and I explained that for the first time in my life, I’ve figured out how to get consistently deep, refreshing sleep almost every night.

What am I doing right?  Well, it’s taken me a long time to figure out all the different [...]

How Do I Sleep at Night?

The global warming crisis is coming to a critical turning point-of-no-return. World human population is reaching ecologically unsustainable, disastrous levels. No Child Left Behind means that students are coming to college (and into my classrooms!) less and less prepared to handle college-level and real-life decisions, produce effective communication, and assess arguments and texts critically [...]

Ham and No Bean Soup

Ham and No-Bean Soup

On October 15, 2012 · Leave a Comment · In Recipes

One of my favorite soups that my mom would make when I was growing up was ham and bean soup.  So yummy, all that smoky, thick, creamy, brothy deliciousness.  However, beans and I do not get along any more.  But that doesn’t mean I have to miss out on this soup.  Well, at [...]

This past summer, we took our vacation camping on Mount Desert Island in Maine, where Acadia National Park is located.  It was a fabulous vacation, but one of the best parts was the FOOD!  The plan was to rough it sleeping-wise so we could splurge on lobster as many nights as we wanted.  (Of [...]

Weight, Weight … don’t tell me

On August 27, 2012 · 3 Comments · In Diet and nutrition, Health and wellness

I have a confession to make.  Raw milk and cream make me fat.

Now, to be fair, this past spring was an extremely stressful time for me.  I was on the job market, flying all over (and beyond) the country for interviews and conferences, plus trying to fit in teaching into my hectic [...]

Salmon-Egg-Purslane Salad on Endive Leaves

On August 20, 2012 · 4 Comments · In Recipes

This was so delicious that I almost forgot to take a picture.  That’s why the two leaves in the photo are teeny-tiny–they came from almost the very center of the endive head!

Oh, and you know what is funny?  I love the purslane in this and other seafood salads (tuna, namely), but I’ve [...]

How to Ground Yourself

On August 13, 2012 · 8 Comments · In Health and wellness

There has been a bit of buzz lately in the blogo-/facebook-sphere about something called “Earthing”, derived largely from a book written on the subject which makes some pretty significant claims about the health benefits of placing your (electrically conductive) body in (conductive) contact with the earth as much as possible.  [...]

Lamb Roast

Lamb Shoulder Roast in the Crockpot

On August 6, 2012 · 1 Comment · In Recipes

This is one of those recipes that you can put together the night before in the crockpot, pop it in the fridge, and then pop it out the next morning, turn on the crockpot and come home to dinner, pre-made and ready to dish out.  I love meals like those.  I need [...]
